Ok, so you need a website? Here are the steps you’ll need to take:

1. Registering a domain name

This isn’t an absolute must, but it’s highly recommended. Some people like to promote a facebook website, or a blogspot account, but to look half-professional you should really register your own domain name. The other important benefit of owning your own domain name is to protect your intellectual property. If you have just set up XYZ Doohicky Pty Ltd you don’t want some other smart alec to register and start promoting xyzdoohicky.com or xyzdoohicky.com.au (and try to sell it to you for big bucks down the track!).

Greengraphics can register any domain name for you, but you don’t have to use us. Have a look around and use any reputable domain registrar. The important thing is to KEEP YOUR REGISTRATION UP TO DATE! Normally you need to renew your domain name every two years, so if you are managing it yourself, please please don’t let it lapse. If you are managing it yourself, please note that your records will be publicly available so you will almost certainly receive messages (and even invoices) from keen and dodgy operators. Make sure you pay the right invoice! If you have any doubts at all, it’s always best to get a professional web company like us manage your domain for you.

If possible, secure alternative domain names, like xyzdoohicky.com and xyzdoohicky.com.au. You might even want to look for different ways of spelling your domain name and register them too.

Once you have a domain name, it doesn’t provide you with anything tangible, but you do have ownership over that domain name… And you can control it or sell it, or do as you please with it, including moving onto the next step…

2. Getting your website hosted

This is perhaps the most cryptic step. Don’t I have a website if I own a domain name? No, a domain name is only a name. A web host gives you a server somewhere (ah yes, something actually tangible… even though we could call it the ‘cloud’) which is a physical spot to load up your files and transfer your emails. Where is this physical spot? With Greengraphics, you get a high-quality spot in a data centre right here in Australia. That’s right, no cheap and nasty overseas connections. Have a look here for more information.

Our yearly web hosting charge will manage all of the little technicalities for you. Just leave it with us and you won’t need to know your zone records from your DNS. But you can simply call us or email us if you’ve ever got any questions. We’ll try to use normal English when we talk to you too… Knowing that behind the scenes our server manager (the best in Australia, perhaps the best in the world) has got all the sites monitored 24/7, functioning as smoothly as any in the known universe.

3. Designing your website

So, you did think about getting your son-in-law to design your site, didn’t you? Or that daughter-of-a-friend-who-lives-down-the-road… Make sure you know what you are getting. These days, it’s pretty easy to make a website. Making it look cool, sharp, professional, funky and one that you can update yourself… well, that’s another story. We are professional web designers who have made hundreds of websites. We know what works and what doesn’t, and we keep up with the latest software and security issues while keeping to classical, beautiful designs that will make your website a lasting investment.
